BOOK REVIEW: "Upload" by Collin Tobin

image

Someone’s always watching.

That's the tagline for Upload, the thriller by Collin Tobin. And in the case of this plot, it's true.
Teenager Jay Brooks lost his mother recently, and lives with his depressed father. He spends all his time with his hacker best friend Bennie, on whose sister he has a major crush.
Bennie secretly films people's precious moments, in a psychological effort to get closer to real society since he's become wheelchair-bound.
But one day the two boys come across a hacker plot so sinister, it may cost them their lives.

I am actually very wary of the Internet, despite having multiple social network profiles. So this book gave me the heebie-jeebies. After you read it, you just might be putting tape over your webcam!
Jay is an endearing character, with a pitiable life and a never-give-up attitude. He's smart and quick-witted and a perfect leading man in the next big teen movie (I vote Under The Dome's Colin Ford in that role).
Bennie kind of gives me the creeps. Probably his extreme voyeurism, but he's a bit unsettling. I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be, but it gave it a good feeling of realism.
The story is long, but the plot is eerie and entertaining. Especially in the age of electronic communications being the main form of contact and a serious addiction for some.
It also talks about loss, lies, and social misconceptions. It's a deep novel, but well worth the time it takes to read it.
Another great book from Red Adept Publishing!

4/5--good work!
