BOOK REVIEW: "Artificial Absolutes" by Mary Fan

Jane Colt is just another recent college grad working as an Interstellar Confederation office drone—until the day she witnesses her best friend, Adam, kidnapped by a mysterious criminal. An extensive cover-up thwarts her efforts to report the crime, shaking her trust in the authorities. Only her older brother, Devin, believes her account.
Devin hopes to leave behind his violent past and find peace in a marriage to the woman he loves. That hope shatters when he discovers a shocking secret that causes him to be framed for murder.
With little more than a cocky attitude, Jane leaves everything she knows to flee with Devin, racing through the most lawless corners of the galaxy as she searches for Adam and proof of her brother’s innocence. Her journey uncovers truths about both of them, leading her to wonder just how much she doesn’t know about the people she loves.

Sci-fi meets Veronica Mars in Mary Fan's Artificial Absolutes, the story of a girl who goes on an intergalactic quest to rescue her kidnapped friend.
This book has a little bit of everything: romance, mystery, conspiracy, and science fiction. Usually those things might not mix well, but somehow Mary Fan managed to wring out a tale that not only works, but is gripping and keeps you entertained for hours!
The characters are all unique and each one has a particular part to play in the narrative. Jane is definitely my favorite, with her sharp wit and confidence. Devin is also very likable, and very pitiable. He's framed for murder and is forced out of the life he's made for himself.
The plot didn't need to be set in the future, but it worked that way, too. It's a journey that starts out as a rescue, but turns into a fact-finding mission. You, as a reader, never know what's coming next. For me, that's a big deal, because I can usually guess everything! You're given here a great novel that will transport you to a whole other world!

4/5--excellent!
