BOOK REVIEW: "Booker - Streets of Mayhem" by John W. Mefford

On a cool October afternoon, the majestic blue sky above Dallas is polluted with swells of gray smoke, carrying shattered memories of fifteen people, mostly children, who've just been killed by an explosion on a bus. A white supremacist group claims responsibility, opening old wounds, turning neighbor against neighbor--fracturing the community.
A Southeast Dallas native, Booker T. Adams couldn't be more invested in the city…in the people he'd served for the last seven years as a beat cop for the Dallas Police Department.  Without warning, it becomes personal for Booker on so many levels. And as panic grips the city, he must decide how much he's willing to sacrifice to end the chaos.
With his career called into question and his family in the crosshairs of one terrorist act after another, Booker invests every fiber of his being to protect a broken community, and to stop the brutal, senseless slayings.
If he fails, terrorism will reign in the city of Dallas.

A mystery/suspense novel that includes homegrown terrorism and social/racial issues isn't something you come across every day, but you do here in John Mefford's newest release.
Following a disgraced cop named Booker T. Adams (great name choice, in my opinion, as I'm a fan of the wrestler Booker T), we get an in-depth look at racial discrimination in the worst way, when children are murdered by a version of the KKK. As someone who was actually targeted once by the group because I'm Sicilian, this story hit close to home.
Of course, readers will think of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin, but this is those stories tenfold.
And it doesn't just rest at being a good commentary on social injustice, oh no. This book has a real plot, a deep mystery that keeps you as hooked as an old Agatha Christie, but written from a very modern view. It shows up close what we really fear, which is terrorists in our backyard. Wanton death for no reason.
It will keep your mind churning, long into the night.

4/5--wonderfully thought-provoking!
