If you're a regular reader of KSR, you'll recognize Harry Shannon as the co-author of the zombie series The Hungry. With his Mick Callahan series, you will see a slightly different literary side of him. Fans of The Hungry will still enjoy this series, despite there being a noted lack of brain munching going on. Instead, there is a different type of brain game being played here: one of alcoholism and egotism; one of revenge and stealth.
I have a thing for professional killers. Don't ask. It's not personal with them, it's either about the thrill or the money. Usually the money. But ever since I was a kid, one of my favorite fictional characters was Deathstroke The Terminator. I loved getting inside his mind and learning what made him tick. In a way, that's some of what this book here is about. Mick needs to find a hitman, and to find someone who doesn't want to be found, you have to get inside his/her head a little.
Being a psychologist, Mick can deduce almost as well as Sherlock Holmes, and getting inside someone's mind is fairly simple for him. This book is not laden with psychological metaphors and ideas, but there are some, and those make the story very interesting.
Mr. Shannon writes characters very straightforward. There is no bull behind them. That's not to say that they aren't complex--they are--but they don't make your head spin with so many layers that it takes away from the plot and its layers.
This is a fantastic thriller with very dark themes, written by a fantastic writer who knows what he's talking about. You like James Patterson? Forget him. Harry Shannon blows him out of the water!
