BOOK REVIEW: "Heart Of Steel 1" by Elizabeth Espanier

When amnesiac cyborg Dr. Alistair Mechanus meets the injured ER doctor Julia Parker, his plans for world conquest are set aside in favor of trying to win her heart. However, due to ten years of solitude dedicated to mad science, his initial efforts terrify her rather than charming her, driving her to try to escape his clutches. When events conspire against both of them, she is forced to trust him with her life, and discovers a vulnerable side to Mechanus beneath his armor plating–but will her efforts to help him unlock his lost memories save his soul, or shatter his mind once and for all?

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book, at first sight, seems a little silly. The name, the plot for world domination, the quick romance. It seems silly. I'm not going to sugarcoat that. But if you are one of those people who will look at the blurb and turn away, you are making a grievous mistake. This novel is anything but silly.
From the moment we meet Alistair, I found him to be a wonderful antihero. He seems like a villain at the outset, but we see a good side of him with Julia. Many of my favorite characters have begun as villains and turned into the best antiheroes. He is not someone you will soon forget, and that's a good thing.
Julia could have used some work, but she was still likable. She manages to reach the humanity buried deep inside of Alistair, bring it to light.
This was a fun novel, merging somewhere between science fiction, romance and a little bit of steampunk. It captured my attention right away and made me feel for the characters in a way many novels fail to. I want to see more of Alistair in the future, and since this book has a "1" after it, I'm hopeful that we will!

4/5--I would call this a must-read!
