BOOK REVIEW: "Drift" by E.M. Whittaker

Synthetic drugs sold by the Zodiac Cartel uproot a dark past Aviere Mye buried.

After recovering from Vinny McSeeten’s murderous spree throughout Baltimore City, Aviere Mye just wants to enjoy her last night of medical leave before returning to work. However, what should have been a peaceful meeting between Aviere and her race sponsor, Louis Armandi, instead ends with a drug-related death inside the Tethered Mistress and a bittersweet reunion with her partner.
Armed with the promise of expunging her brother’s darkest sin and receiving more information about her husband’s mysterious disappearance, Aviere charges into the investigation, hoping to solve their case—as well as her personal problems—within their ten-day deadline. In order to survive her second assignment, Aviere understands that only the strongest units prevail.
However, when Travis’ growing powers threaten them all and Peters tries undermining her authority, Aviere must confront her darkest fears before her partners destroy everything the Poisoner holds dear.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have a soft spot for kick a** heroines who actually kick a**. That being said, Aviere Mye is now one of my top three favorite fictional characters. She has an attitude, gives zero fucks, and, oh yeah, she's a shapeshifter. But something I love is that Whittaker doesn't place special emphasis on her unnatural abilities, rather she focuses on Mye's brain power, her love of racing, and her pseudo-pharmaceutical skills.
Travis, Mye's partner, really grew on me in this book. I'm starting to like him and I LOVE that he and Mye have zero physical/romantic connection. He still loves his deceased wife, and Mye still loves her disappeared husband. This isn't a love story, and that's awesome.
Peters is a character I would love to see fed to piranhas. I despise him. The fact that these three disparate characters not only work together but even exist in the same universe is testament to the writing skills.
Unlike book one, Drift has no repetitiveness, rather it's much more action-packed with a lot of introspection and mystique sandwiched in between.
If you love urban fantasy with a twist (and no romance), this is the book for you. Seriously, you will not regret reading this series!
Now, where is book three? I need to know what happens next!

5/5--brilliantly crafted.
Puchase Drift via Amazon.
