BOOK REVIEW: "Synthetic Illusions" by Mary Fan
Illusion is the only reality.
Jane’s new career as a composer is a dream come true, but her blossoming relationship with Adam is marred by his terrifying nightmares. When Jane receives a warning that a shadowy agency is targeting Adam’s seminary school, she rescues him in the nick of time, but the only way she can protect him from such a powerful enemy is to run.
In a shocking betrayal, her brother wasn’t the one who warned her about the attack on Adam. Instead, Devin was leading it. As Jane struggles to keep one step ahead of Devin, Adam’s exhaustion gives way to horror: His nightmares have begun to touch the real world.
Jane can’t abandon Adam to a fate worse than death, and far more than Adam’s life hangs in the balance. As Jane pushes further into the dark unknown, she must challenge everything she once believed in, and she faces the most wrenching decision of her life: choosing between the two people she loves most.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
After reading Artificial Absolutes, I was dying to know what was going to happen next with Jane and her motley crew of family and friends, so I was very pleased with what I found in Synthetic Illusions after Ms. Fan sent it to me.
In this book we see Jane Colt in more of a take-charge position than she was in AA, and we get to see different sides of her in this book. I love her attitude. She's not going to take anyone's sh*t, and even if she comes off as angry or a b*tch, that's okay. It's what made me love her as a female lead. I'm sick of polite, dainty girls who need sidekicks. The world needs more heroines like Jane.
The other characters we met in the first book have also evolved in various ways, some good and some bad. Devin is a lot easier to understand as a character here, and Adam is kind of adorable in a victim role. I liked him as a hero, but I also like seeing his vulnerable side, which we don't often see in a male character.
The story flows and makes you wish your ereader never needed to be charged! The new characters are a real treat, each of them playing a crucial role in the book and giving us even more characters to love. I swear, Ms. Fan even writes villains in such a way that you just love them! Yes, I'm gushing, but that's only because I am a fan myself.
We learn a lot more about the futuristic planet they all live on, how life goes there and its scenery. It's not the kind of sci-fi that makes you sit and say, "How do I pronounce this?" or "What exactly is this?" It could be a great book to introduce people to the genre. It also doesn't follow the typical, "Let's get on a spaceship and go fight an intergalactic species," like we have seen for decades upon decades. It was all very human while being on the wrong side of weird, which I love.
A really excellent book all around!
5/5--a new age of sci-fi!
