BOOK REVIEW: "Timothy Other: The Boy Who Climbed Marzipan Mountain" by L. Sydney Abel
12 year-old adventurer, the intriguingly named Timothy Other, escapes the Dreams and Hopes Orphanage and travels to the bizarre world of Marzipan Mountain, where he befriends some amazing creatures. With the help of his friends, Timothy seeks to discover his true origins and returns to the Orphanage. He becomes embroiled in a matter of life and death and faces the evil forces that crave the secret of ‘Golden Life’.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
It's always a treat for me to read middle grade/YA fiction. When I was a kid, I loved the fantastical stories about kids going on amazing adventures by authors like Darren Shan or Gail Carson Levine. Timothy Other reminds me of Mrs. Levine's work, and that is a high compliment!
In this book, Mr. Abel creates a wonderful child lead, an orphan and very headstrong boy that kids will want to be or have as their best friend. He's a sympathetic lead, and very realistic in a story that is anything but.
This is a story that, while utterly imaginary, has its roots in reality. There are lessons to be learned, but they are so well-written, the readers won't know they're learning them. This isn't a book for school, or for analyzing (though I could sit here and analyze it if I were so inclined). This is a book for kids to read and be entertained. This is fun, and the exact kind of fun I'd have when I was young.
4/5--sweet and imaginative!
