~ Excerpt ~

You want to feel better, and everything you’ve tried has not had the results you expect. Perhaps, you want to look better as you age or, while you’re young, you want to be the best that you can be. This book can help you. If you’re an author or you work at a computer, you may sit for half of your day only getting up to make another pot of coffee, grab something to snack on, or to use the bathroom. In other words, you spend most of your time being inactive. Heck, it’s no wonder after you’re done, all you want to do is sleep or veg out in front of the TV. I went from a pot-bellied two hundred ten pound, thirty-eight-inch waist semislob to a fit-bodied one hundred sixty-four pound, twenty-nine inch waist semistud, but it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t hard, either. It was a process, a slow one. I didn’t rush; I just stayed persistent and created a new lifestyle that was focused on feeling better and dealing with stress more easily. Talk about late bloomer. I can’t believe it. At fifty, I’ve never felt and looked better! The purpose of this book is to show you how to take a day-by-day approach to living a healthier lifestyle. How amazing will it be to unleash hidden energies that can alleviate stress and disease in your life? You will even have more energy to write! Literally, being more active can help you overcome writer’s block and procrastination caused by fatigue.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: "Continent of Ruby" by BB Cape

The true story of a woman who knew her life was about to come undone and let it come undone anyway only to find herself in the redeeming grace of the unknown.

The doctors have found a malignant tumor in Ruby’s gall bladder. They closed her up and designated her case terminal. Stacy calls me, shocked. She repeats the prognosis verbatim: the bile ducts are compromised. In the future, and for the sake of comfort, the ducts can be drained of cancerous cells. There is no therapy being considered, and pain management will be arranged. An oncologist will be consulted. “I am sorry,” the doctor said.
“Why didn’t they just take the gall bladder,” I ask Stacy, ignorant of the ambition of a malignancy, thinking that Ruby’s tumor can be excised with a knife, removed from its habitat, and banished to the hazardous waste bin. My mind is torpid; fear sets in. “Stacy, Stacy,” I call out when her voice trails off. “What else did he say?” I ask, and she repeats the prognosis.
That afternoon Stacy, her husband, son, in-laws, and my children and I stand around Ruby’s hospital bed. Everyone in the cancer ward at Memorial Hospital gets a private room with a view.
Stacy is talking on her cell phone. Everybody else in the room paces. We are the rowdy newcomers to the ward. We do not accept – nor do we plan on accepting – any of its lethargy, unlike the mother of the young woman across the way, who watches with patience and concern as her adult daughter tries to get back into the bed, moving as if her discomfort is the size of the entire room. Even the nurses are slow when summoned. Maybe they think there is no need to rush any more. We bring with us the robust outside world and will not accept the ward’s sluggish pace of feeling, being, and thinking. We resist it all – the children want to watch television, the in-laws need a soda and go in search of a vending machine, and Stacy’s husband needs to go home to walk the dog.
When we look at Ruby, we don’t see her any longer. Instead, we see her cancer. Initially, we think: “How can this happen to one of us? Yesterday she was …” More specifically, we look for physical evidence of the cancer, as if it will expose itself, flip us the finger, stick out its tongue, or howl with laughter right in our faces. But, what is happening is more ominous and technical than that:
1.FINDINGS COMPATIBLE WITH ADVANCED GALLBLADDER CARCINOMA WITH LIVER INVASION AND LIVER METASIS WITH MASS MEASURING APPROXIMATELY 8.5 X 7.5 CM, EXTENDING THROUGH HEPATIC SEGMENTS 4B, 4A AND TO A LESSER DEGREE, 5. SEVERAL LIVER LESIONS ARE DEMONSTRATED IN THE APPROXIMATELY1.5-CM RANGE.
2.CANNOT RULE OUT EARLY CARCINOMATOSIS ALONG THE OMENTUM ANTERIORLY EXTENDING TOWARD THE PELVIS.
3.DUCTAL DILATION IS DEMONSTRATED DUCTAL DILATION EXTENDS INFERIORLY TO THE LEVEL OF THE AMPULLA.
END OF IMPRESSION
On the phone, Stacy tells family and friends her mother has Stage 4 Gall Bladder Cancer. Terminal. Some of them speak with Ruby. Others send their prayers and well wishes. Still others are frightened by the sudden and tragic twist of events; they will call Ruby another time. At the moment, the information is too raw and incomprehensible to process – they were just sitting down to dinner, watching the evening news, not prepared for this news. Stacy is cordial. She says she appreciates their support. Any emails, calls, or cards will “lift the spirits.”

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: "Once A Goddess (Brigid Trilogy #1)" by Sheila R. Lamb

For the sake of peace, Brigid of the supernatural Túatha de Danann enters into an arranged marriage with Bres, the prince of the enemy, and casts aside her own hopes for happiness. Set in a time when myths were reality, Once a Goddess brings the legend of the Ireland’s magical Túatha dé Danann to life…

Follow along with the Once a Goddess virtual book tour for more exciting content!

The following are three small sections from the first few pages of Once a Goddess. Below are footnotes in which the author explains some of her ideas, intentions, and other personal insights!

I told no one of this knowledge of Bres. When I discovered we would marry, I wanted to determine his character for myself [1]. He did not know that I, Brigid, watched him. Destined to be his wife, part of a treaty meant to end the summer of fighting between our tribes. His communion with the land was his first encounter with the Danann mysteries. I did nothing to dissuade his experience and believed this one-sided meeting would give me some bit of power over him on the day we wed [2].

***

My earliest incarnation was as a daughter of the Túatha dé Danann. We were the people of Danu, of Eiru, Éire, Erin and Ireland. As Éire’s earliest inhabitants, we were elevated once to the status of gods and goddesses. We were revered after our downfall, remembered, worshiped, until we faded into legends of “fairy folk.” [3] Yet, as in all myths, there lies a bit of truth. The truth is this: Dagda was my father and Macha, my mother. We were one with the green and mist-filled island. Our duty, the purpose of the Túatha dé Danann existence, was to protect and cherish the island. We lived alongside the towering oaks. We scaled stony outcrops to search for eggs hidden in sea birds’ nests as we looked upon the waves pounding on the shore below. Our homes were beneath the emerald hillsides, closer to the earth, the source of our strength.

Our isolation enabled us to learn skills which most have now forgotten. We were able to shape shift. With our minds, we learned to communicate with each other without spoken words. Our intuition developed more keenly [4]. Of course, skills such as shape shifting took generations to learn. It was a constant daily practice and way of life.

***

The summer of battles was brief, but intense. The Fomorians, the newcomers, desired to own our land and were willing to kill for it. [5] Our people died, blood soaked into the soil and still the Elders refused to use our weapons, the full force of our magic that surely would have defeated them. They were determined to keep our connection to the elements a secret. They decided the best course of action would be peace. And the way to peace, they told me, was to ally with the enemy. The surest way to an alliance was marriage. [6]

“He is called Bres.” Father said when the fighting ended. “He is the next chieftain of the Fomorian tribe.” The valley had been empty for days. Both sides suffered losses; neither side could declare victory. But we couldn’t survive a prolonged war with the Fomorians. I sat at the edge of the Western Sea and tried to turn to stone so I would not hear my awful fate. As stone, I could allow the waves to beat against me and drown out my father’s inevitable words. “Brigid, this marriage will bring peace to our tribe.”

Insights from author Sheila R. Lamb:

[1] I wanted the reader and Brigid to see Bres as he was - even just for a moment. If he was completely horrible, I don’t think Brigid would have married him. Despite all of his complications, Bres simply wants to find where he belongs. That opening scene shows one of his few moments of peace.

[2] Brigid has been fighting Bres and his tribe, literally, on the battlefield. And now, suddenly, all of that fighting ability, her power, is taken away from her, taken by her own people. The Danann ask her: what’s more important - the good of the tribe or one woman’s happiness? Brigid has no control over her situation, so in this scene, she’s searching for any bit of knowledge or information that may help her. Anything to keep a little bit of her power, her control of her life. She sees in Bres his quieter, more vulnerable side. He does seem to connect to the land as the Danann are able to do, so how can she use that knowledge to influence him? Knowing this commonality, can she work it to her advantage?

[3] The Danann battled the Fir Bolg, the Fomorian, and, lastly, the Milesians, or as we know today, the Celts (originally from Iberia - Spain/Portugal). It was Amergin of the Milesians who led the Danann underground so that his tribe could take the land. When the Tuatha de Danann went underground they became known over time as fairies. One of the best historical novels about this final battle is Bard by Morgan Llywelyn (one of my favorite authors and definitely an influence on my writing). The best research site I used for all three books was CELT, Corpus of Electronic Texts.

[4] I had a hard time choosing fantasy elements at all. I’m more of a historical fiction reader, rather than fantasy. But these aspects are part of the mythology and later, part of druid belief. In the battle against the Milesians, the Danann brought down the mists to confuse the ships at sea. So, they had powers to work with natural elements. It seems only right that the early inhabitants of Ireland should be able to connect with and shift into the land, especially given what happens to them in the end. Ironically, they are pushed so far underground they could not return.

[5] The Fomorians are based on the mythology and legends I researched in Lady Gregory’s stories, CELT documents, and other general texts about Irish history. Not to sound completely unoriginal, but I didn’t have to make up a lot of the Danann story. I took what myth was there and fictionalized it. I did add in their search for metals for weapon making - anything to contrast them with these smaller, fairy-like people they tried to conquer.

[6] The various sources do mention marriage specifically. For example, “The marriage of Brigid to Bres was essentially an alliance to bring peace between two warring factions.”

I think in this particular case, the bringing together of two tribal leaders needs a formal ceremony, such as marriage. Anam cara (“soul friend”), in Once a Goddess, is something the Túatha dé Danann believed, but not necessarily the Fomorians. The Fomorians were a much more structured, logical, pragmatic group. No time for soul searching or magic. They were builders and conquerors. Even if the Danann didn’t have the concept of marriage, I think the formalized ceremony would have been necessary in this arrangement and peace treaty.

The Danann do have marriage because of their belief in soul mates. It’s saying unequivocally, this person is who I am destined to be with, no matter what. Later, a character named Eiru’s past is exposed, and the unbreakable bond of soul mates is why her secret was hidden for so long. The fact that her tribe insisted Brigid marry someone who is not her soul mate is unheard of. It shows how desperate they were for peace.

Sheila Lamb received an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University. Her stories have earned Pushcart and storySouth Million Writers Award nominations and can be found, along with a few photographs, here. She’s also the journal editor for Santa Fe Writers Project. Sheila has traveled throughout Ireland and participated in the Achill Archaeology Field School. She loves Irish history, family genealogy, and is easily distracted by primary source documents. She lives, teaches, and writes in the mountains of Virginia. Once a Goddess is the first book in the Brigid trilogy.

Author Bio:
Hello lovers of apocalyptic fiction!

I devour the same books I enjoy writing: science fiction, but especially anything apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic or dystopian. I love stories about regular people being put into extra ordinary circumstances, and having to rely on their own cunning and that of others to survive.

Stone Age & DESOLATION are that kind of story. They're fast moving, have some regular and amazing characters who must make life changing decisions, all while the world is experiencing an apocalypse unlike anything imagined.

When not writing fiction, my wife and I split time between Tucson, Arizona and the sunny beaches of Mexico. I also write for a few blogs, and I still write articles to assist small business owners for one of the companies I founded, SmallBiZ.com.

Excerpts:

From Chapter 1:
Deadly Waters
Rocky Point, Mexico

A loud screeching cut through the raw morning air, rousing Bill and Lisa King from a fitful sleep of restless nightmares.
The uproar was one more in the endless list of sounds they had never heard before, which made up their life after the apocalypse. It wasn’t the frightening death-throe-screams that followed distant gunshots across the town’s estuaries, or the constant electrical buzz that filled the atmosphere all around them. This sound was a monstrous and powerful outcry immediately outside their beach home.
Bill sprang out of bed, a .45 in his hand, ready to bring death to some poor S.O.B. who was probably just hungry and looking for food.
“What is that?” he bellowed.
“Don’t know, but it’s close,” Lisa shouted barely loud enough to be heard, flying to the window, scarcely touching the carpet.
Impossibly, the roar grew louder. Its deep, penetrating tones were undaunted by their walls and attempts to muffle the assault to their eardrums. It sounded like some angry mechanical leviathan, tearing at the sand and coral with its metal claws.
Standing at the window, Bill pried open the blinds, his jaw dropping farther with each inch revealed. The source of that racket was worse than the prehistoric monster he imagined.
“It’s a cruise ship?” He blinked, transfixed in disbelief. His wife’s eyes mirrored his distrust.
The dark behemoth was a passenger ship but no less terrifying than a T-rex might have been, made malicious by the green auroras illuminating its hull, as though it had been belched out of the depths to destroy them. It crept up onto their beach, slowly pushed by some invisible force, intent on burrowing a bloody trail to town.
The screeching persisted for what seemed an endless amount of time, until the beast ran out of inertia. The high incoming tide deposited it less than one hundred meters from their property.
When the dreadful noise ceased, the relative quiet made the constant thrumming sound of the wind-driven sand drubbing the home’s windows and outside walls sound louder. The hulk lay unmoving, as if asleep, and they stood motionless for fear of waking it.
The light from tonight’s auroras was bright and pulsating, outlining the massive vessel’s form. Out of the water, it looked much taller, not listing as expected but sitting upright almost as if it were properly parked in the port five miles up the coast. Each spectral blast of green revealed more of the ship’s evil presence. A fire on the port side, evidenced by blackened scarring, made it appear that the devil’s own giant hand had reached out from the ship’s bowels, leaving molten prints burned into its hide from the first row of balconies up to the silent chimney stacks. When the pulsating light ebbed, shadowing the ship in a momentary darkness, it almost looked like a normal cruise liner awaiting tourists that would never come. For a ship normally carrying a couple thousand crew and passengers in its belly, there were no signs of life.

Relative Strangers:

A Modern Vampire Story

Sophie Morgan Vampire Series Book 1

Helen Treharne

PUBLISHED 23 AUGUST 2014

Book Description:

Meet Sophie Morgan… practical, Welsh, prone to occasional profanity, and seemingly a vampire magnet.

Sophie Morgan is 23 and has always done the right thing. She's caused no stress for her family, worked hard through university, has taken a successful leap onto the career ladder and nurtured a reasonably healthy bank balance.  It's no small surprise then when, on a post relationship break-up, mini-break to Antwerp, she pursues a pair of thieves who steal her friend's handbag.  But this is only the start of her world being turned upside down.  Ripped from the streets into a dark alley she is violently attacked, barely alive when quirky Irish bar worker, Michael Kelly, stumbles across the scene.

The pair, shocked by their experience and uncertain whether they have killed her attacker in the brawl which follows, go into the night for answers.   They get more than they bargained for. Sophie quickly learns that vampires exist, her neighbours back home aren't what they seem and new boyfriends can be found in the strangest of situations.

Relative Strangers is the first in a new vampire series with a distinctly British flavour, but which will appeal to everyone.  Reviews call it "a vampire tale with bite", with "brilliant characters that draw you in" and a very fresh take on the genre. Read it now to find out what reviewers are raving about.

RELATIVE STRANGERS BY HELEN TREHARNE - EXCERPTS

Excerpt 1

I tried to scream, but I couldn't, the arm was curled so tightly around my throat it was making it impossible to breathe. Breathing through your nose isn't easy when you're in a blind panic, but I tried anyway.
Cold fingers were clamped over my cheek and the side of my mouth. I tried to move my jaw to at least get a bite of my attacker, but it was impossible. Why didn't I go back with Mickey? Please Mickey, come back. Anyone, help me, please, please.
As we struggled in the confines of the doorway, I hoped that someone would come to my aid. Bars and nightclubs would be shutting their doors soon and that would surely mean someone would have to come by soon? All I had to do was stay alive long enough to be found. Surely Mickey would see me soon? But why would he? He would probably assume that I was totally unhinged by now and that I'd wandered off somewhere. My thoughts were racing as I struggled and my head was throbbing.
Then the searing pain ripped through my body. I couldn't tell what was happening, but I knew it wasn't good. First, there was an ice cold stabbing sensation in my neck. Then came the burning, a river of heat surging through my veins. I'd never felt anything like it before. Coherence was terminated the instant I felt my flesh tear open. Blood poured down my neck.
I wasn't sure what weapon he could be using, but I could feel his nose resting on the side of my chin, his mouth maneuvering itself around my neck, moving in a circular gnawing motion. Oh my God, I'm being bitten. Someone is actually biting me. What next? This cannot be happening? This can't be real. What the ***? I can't die like this.
Then everything went black.

Excerpt 2

Rachel hadn't felt so good in years. The colours of the world were vibrant and laid out before her like a beautiful carpet, a glorious vibrating kaleidoscope of nature. Birdsong echoed in her ears like a concerto and the golden welcome of the rising sun made the world look like a furnace, molten lava pouring over it all.
She sipped the coffee that she had made. It tasted bitter and she spat it out over the perfectly dressed window sill. She'd made it out of habit. Ferrers had instructed her to appear as ordinary as possible. The routine of everyday existence would eventually help her contain her urges, or rather the singularly dangerous one, the one to kill. So far, it wasn't working. Perhaps it was time to succumb to the hunger and to all the other suppressed desires now angrily bubbling to the surface.
Her reflection in the window surprised her. She had half expected it to be absent. Her hair looked thick and luxurious; her eyes sparkled and the hazel flecks in her irises danced in the sunlight. It had been years since she'd felt this good, hell, maybe a lifetime, maybe never at all. She felt strong, powerful, and alive. Had she always looked this beautiful, she wondered. Had her new vampire state made her better, or only imbued her with a new found confidence? Either way, she liked it. She could feel every nerve ending in her body, everything performing in precisely the right way, like a well-oiled machine. It was magnificent.

Excerpt 3

Every hair on his scalp stood to attention, every skin cell tingled, every neuron fired. Warmth spread across his chest. His heart pounded hard in his chest as she finally came to a halt before him, inches from his face. This was a new feeling - excitement maybe? He was aroused beyond his understanding, like the hunger of a starving man. She was stunning. Is this what real desire feels like, or is it the drugs? Had he ever felt this excited before? It was as if he had just been born, experiencing the world and all its sensory pleasures for the first time, all in one hit. The thought that he might not be able to perform under the drug's influence flashed across his brain, but he shook it off; there was nothing that was going to stop him from having her. He didn't care if they were in some dirty, a hundred people could walk past and he wouldn't have given a toss. He would have her, devour her. The feeling was amazing.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

In addition to being the creator of the developing "Sophie Morgan" series, Helen is an urban poet and social commentator who can frequently be found ranting in the Twitterverse.  She knew the degree in Sociology would come in handy some day!
Helen lives with her husband, three cats, an entrenched tea addiction and an increasing collection of stringed instruments. When she's not writing she spends her time daytime hours working in communications and volunteers for a feline welfare charity. She also spends too much time watching Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
She also can't be trusted near stationery and has probably had more come backs than Cher.

Extract from Legends of Origin, Book 1: Sanctuary for the Devil by Vanessa Finaughty

Thirty-three-year-old Liam MacAskill hurried across the desert sand, imposing mountain peaks at his back, their size dwindling as he progressed. He did his best to ignore the howling wind ripping at his clothes and whipping his dark hair into his face, often stinging his eyes and blinding him. He ignored the relentless rain and hailstones, pelting his face and adding to the bruises and gashes he knew must cover him from head to toe. He also paid no heed to the throbbing in his wounded leg, knowing that to acknowledge its existence would empower it to control him. How pathetic it would be to escape Sah’s wrath only to be ended by a minor wound such as the one his captors had given him during his escape.
It was a flesh wound, really. Nothing more. Just the tip of a guard’s sword had slashed Liam’s left thigh, and it hadn’t hindered his escape in the least. In fact, the flash of pain he’d felt as the wound had been inflicted had made new adrenaline course through him, enabling him to overpower three guards – all at least twice his size, and armed with Earth technology, too. Making his way over the mountain range bordering the enemy palace was what had made the wound a problem.
Gensshei Mountains were usually easy to traverse, he’d been told – if you had a horse to carry you along the winding pathways for the three days it took to reach the other side. Liam had been forced to climb its towering peaks, causing his injured leg to go into spasm so many times he’d lost count, albeit saving him two days’ journey. The soldiers would have pursued on horseback along the mountains’ main path, splitting up to explore the narrower, lesser-used paths. He doubted they would have expected him to attempt the climb – or survive it.
A soft chuckle escaped Liam, and he choked it back, increasing his pace and lowering his head further to protect his face from the hail, although his neck ached from being in that position for almost twenty-four hours. He had not come this far to give himself away with insane, foolish laughter. Liam had nothing to laugh about, and he could be wrong – his enemies could, right at that moment, be climbing the mountains towards him. His leg throbbed more the closer he got to his destination.
The end of the desert came into sight.
Waves thundered just over the sand dunes ahead.
He was almost there. Almost safe. Just over the dunes, a short way down the beach, was the sanctuary he sought.
The sky darkened rapidly now as night came, and Liam found a new surge of energy as lightning fragmented the sky and a sharp thunderclap vibrated the ground. Everything forgotten but the need to reach the dunes, he drew his royal blue coat tighter around him, crossed his arms to keep it in place, then increased his pace to a jog, his bones protesting every movement. He had a bad feeling, and, the sooner he reached safety, the sooner it would go away. He hoped.

Liam stood atop the dune, panting and staring down at the tableau before him in dismay. The beach below, which should have been soft, white sand, was covered in what looked like broken glass. Dark coldness crept into his heart, spreading its tendrils to chill him further. He looked down at his bare feet, already bleeding from the climb and walk through the desert’s sand. This was bad.
Gathering his senses, Liam made his way down the dune, slipping and sliding a few times. He bent to examine the shimmering sand, and frowned. It was glass. Shattered glass, covering his only route to safety. Safety, about a kilometre down the beach, where Gensshei Mountains wrapped around to meet the ocean. The dunes on either side were too steep for him to climb in his current condition, making this glittering carpet his only route. Liam cursed under his breath. How could this be? Despair grasped his mind as he straightened to gaze around in panic-induced madness.
The shattered pieces were all clear glass and all clean looking, with no indication of where they had come from. Liam’s frown deepened as he pondered his predicament. If he turned back now, he was a guaranteed dead man. He would never make it over the peaks a second time, and would walk straight into Sah’s men if he turned back to go along the path. Those being his only two options, Liam sucked in a deep breath, and, the decision not quite taken form yet, dashed onto the glass fragments in the direction of Tridor Monastery… where he could claim sanctuary under this land’s laws of God.
Liam barely noticed as sand dunes melted into scattered rocks, then solid rock face. His injured leg threatened to cave in, but he sprinted forward, focussed on speed and his destination. Being able to focus so single-mindedly was one of the many benefits he’d gained from daily meditation for the last three years – a requirement at the dojo where he had trained in Ki Aikido and Ninjitsu, amongst other martial arts. He’d hated it at first, but it had been a condition of employment at the private investigation company he had worked for up until recently… Up until he’d met Joshua.
The hail stopped abruptly, and, along with it, the hail and wind, almost as if nature held its breath to see if he’d make it, and his surprise slowed him for a moment, but he rectified that quickly. His coat came loose as he came around the beach’s curve, where a small natural harbour blocked the way forward. The wind came back with a vengeance and whipped his coat up into his face, causing him to stumble. Just then, his leg gave in and he collapsed on the sand, his lungs on fire and his heart beating wildly. He couldn’t feel his feet, which he figured was probably for the best.
Liam pulled himself onto his hands and knees. He glanced at the harbour’s enormous waves in front of him. Lightning struck in the distance. On the harbour’s far shore, something glistened as it snaked inland – a river? He blinked and it was gone. He looked to his right. The narrow stretch of sand that extended towards his right, leading back towards the mountains – what would be considered part of the ‘holy land’ the monastery stood on – was free of glass. Odd. A frown creased his brow again. When he tried to stand, Liam realised that his feet would take no more punishment. He caught a glimpse of one as he collapsed again; he couldn’t see his flesh for blood. He decided not to look at them again.
With a shuddering breath, Liam began to crawl towards the monastery. Walking along the stretch of sand bordering the harbour and up the short, gradually inclining pathway that led up the mountain towards the monastery would have taken a mere few minutes. Crawling along it, however, and in the middle of a strange mixed-weather storm, was another story. Liam grimaced as he dragged his feet along the sand. He was injuring himself further, but he didn’t care. The only thing he cared about was reaching the monastery. Everything would be okay then. The healers would heal him with their magic when he got there. Every time he moved forward, he was convinced he could go no further. Eventually, his knees gave in on him, too, and he heaved himself onwards with his elbows, determined to reach safety.
Liam finally reached the bottom of the mountain pathway. Without pause, he dragged himself along it. If he stopped, however briefly, he wouldn’t find the strength to continue. He knew this without a doubt. After what felt like days of torture, worse, even, than that he had endured at Sah’s hands, the monastery came into view, partly hidden by hanging tree branches and bushes. Built mostly into the mountain, the stone-walled monastery rose three storeys, with a round two-storey tower, the top floor windowless, extending from the roof in the centre.
Tears of relief streamed down Liam’s cheeks to mingle with rain water as he dragged himself towards the monastery at a faster pace, all pain forgotten. If he could just reach the front steps, he would be able to claim sanctuary. He collapsed just a few paces from the steps, his aching arms unable to take any more punishment. Just as the bitterness of failure was about to consume him, a voice called out nearby, “Look! Over there!”
Without warning, the wind picked up, tearing at Liam’s clothes as if trying to claim him for itself. Seconds later, gentle hands turned him onto his back, and he looked into the concerned blue eyes of a blond monk.
“He’s hurt! Call the healer!”
A second voice shouted something back that Liam couldn’t hear above the howling wind. He reached up, grabbed the monk’s collar and rasped, “Sanctuary. I claim sanctuary.”
Then he fell back and passed out.

The blond monk, Arthean, looked down at the stranger, perplexed. From whom did he claim sanctuary? He was the second stranger in the last week to claim sanctuary here, and the first had fallen into a coma before they could question him. Before that, the last time anyone had claimed sanctuary at Tridor Monastery had been at least thirteen years ago, at which time it had done the unfortunate soul no good, as the Lord of the Land at that time had been a godless man named Kyain who had no respect for the law and had invaded the premises to claim his prize. Since sanctuary had meant nothing under Kyain’s rule, nobody had attempted to claim it after that, and, after the war that had seen the fall of Kyain and the rise of Sah, nobody had needed sanctuary. Sah ruled fairly, and none had ever opposed his rule.
So from what, then, did this stranger claim sanctuary? Arthean shivered violently and glanced back down the pathway to his left, then towards the harbour below. Both were empty. He stared down at the man again; his expensive-looking coat was torn so badly that it was now worth no more than rags, his right trouser leg was blood stained, wet sand crusted his eyes, his face was covered in red, rapidly swelling lumps – presumably gifts from the hailstones earlier – and his feet were caked in so much blood and sand that it was difficult to see the full extent of his injuries. Whatever he claimed sanctuary from, it was understandable.
Certhon – Tridor’s healer – arrived with two monks and placed the stranger on a stretcher to carry him inside. Arthean followed, sensing an omen in the second stranger’s arrival, as he had with the first. An omen more powerful than any he’d been sent in all of his thirty-five years. Whether it was good or bad was yet to be seen.

INTERVIEW WITH VANESSA FINAUGHTY:

1. What made you decide to put together a boxed set featuring both your work?

My co-author was invited to participate in a month-long iBooks promo for multi-author box sets, and she asked me if I would like to include my books. I obviously jumped at the chance – opportunities like that don’t come along often.

2. Can you tell the readers a little about what stories/novels you included in the set?

The first three books in my sci-fi fantasy adventure series, Legends of Origin, are included – the series revolves around the MC’s need to know mankind’s origins and his greater purpose in life. Also included are my two fantasy short story collections, Dragon Kin and other fantasy stories and Sorcery & Subterfuge – there’s a nice mix of light-hearted stories and more series ones, all of them including popular fantasy elements like dragons, magic and elves, and many introducing readers to new fantasy beings and creatures.

3. What is it about the mythological/fantasy world that intrigues you so much?

In fantasy worlds, the good guys almost always win in the end. That isn’t true for real life.

4. What inspires your writing?

Real events have inspired some of my short stories, but, when it comes to my fantasy stories and novels, each story usually starts with a vivid scene in my mind, and the rest just pops into my head as I write.

5. Use three words to entice readers into buying the boxed set.

Original fantasy adventure.

INTERVIEW WITH TC SOUTHWELL:

1. What made you decide to put together a boxed set featuring both your work?

My distributer, Smashwords.com, invited me to participate in Apple iBookstore’s major month-long promotion of multi-author box sets. As my friend and an up and coming indie fantasy/sci-fi author whose work I enjoy, Vanessa was obviously my choice of partner.

2. Can you tell the readers a little about what stories/novels you included in the set?

The box set has four of my series starters and the second books in those series, which are The Queen’s Blade, a six-book fantasy series about a vengeful assassin who changes the fate of three kingdoms, The Cyber Chronicles, a nine-book science-fiction/fantasy series about a damaged cyborg’s struggle to be free, The Broken World, a four-book fantasy series about an alien world’s rebellion against mankind’s ravages, and Demon Lord, an eight-book fantasy series about a mortal god’s struggle to use his dark power to do good.

3. What is it about the mythological/fantasy world that intrigues you so much?

It’s the ultimate escapism, as it transports its readers to alien worlds where they have exciting adventures with fascinating heroes and heroines who have magic powers or mind-boggling abilities.

4. What inspires your writing?

I’m a channeller, so the stories come to me complete, like a film in my head, and I write what I see, feel and hear. I have no control over the path the tales take or what my heroes and heroines do, which makes writing a grand adventure.

5. Use three words to entice readers into buying the boxed set.

Romantic fantasy adventures.
