AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Ronel van Tonder

1. When/why did you decide to become a writer?

I've been writing since about the age of 10. I think it was the allure of creating imaginery worlds and places. Perhaps being (and still being) an introvert contributed to this in some way. That, and my parents belief that a child should always have their noses buried in a book.

2. What authors inspired you when you were younger? What books do you enjoy reading today?

I read a ton of Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Dean Koontz and James Herbert, to mention but a few. I preferred the fantasy and horror genres. My tastes have remained practially unchanged. However, I'm finding great joy in reading indie authors' books. There are some talented writers out there.

3. What was the inspiration behind your novel Compile:Quest?

The concept of the domes came from Jacques Frescoe's "The Venus Project", which is a societal model that stems from a resource-based economy. From this came the idea of how life in the future could operate. But I knew not everyone would be able to get inside the domes. So I started wondering about the people living outside. From those scraps the story just evolved into the beast it is today.

4. Why futuristic science fiction?

Futuristic sci-fi is like a petri dish for the mind. You can grow the most fantastic things in there. New societies, technologies... the sky's the limit. Or... well... space is the limit. Or is it?
Basically, it allows for a blank canvas that makes painting the world you want your characters to reside in so much easier. You write your own history (depending how far into the future your novel is set), and you can decide which path mankind wanders (or stumbles) down.

5. Will we see these characters again in the future?

Yes. There is a second and a third book on the way. Depending on the interest in the series, I'll consider writing a prequel. But I have tons of other writing projects, so the prequel might take a backseat for now.

6. Were any of your characters' personalities or emotions taken from real life?

I'm sure they were. I lack any kind of cataloguing system in my brain. So when I see the characters in my mind, I do often find they do have their own quirks. I assume some of these might be from people I know, or movies I've watched, or other books I've read, but it's as if they have all been processed and spat out as something completely different.

7. What other genres would you like to try your hand at?

I will be writing a horror novel after this, then switching back to sci-fi. I might ressurect an uncompleted fantasy novel from my youth or start a new one.

8. What would you do if you were in either of your protagonists' positions?

I really don't know. I'm so different from any of them that I probably wouldn't even *get* into those positions were it me. But  if I did? Then I'd probably curl up into a little ball and sing a happy song until all the weird goes away. I'm neither brave nor scrappy.

9. You say on your site that you also write horror. What are your plans on releasing anything horror-based in the future?

Yes, I will be writing a horror after I'm done with the second and third books of the Corrupted SUN Script. I would estimate, if all goes well, that is should be released March/April next year.

10. Would you like to see as Compile:Quest as a film or TV show? Who do you want to play your characters?

Yes please! I think the books are a bit lengthy for a movie, but I can definitely see it as a 8-episode, 3-season television series.

11. Where do you see yourself and your career in the next ten years?

Best-selling author. (Which author doesn't?)

12. What would you be doing if you weren't writing?

Cannot compute. Life without writing is like... Life without life.

13. Can you tell KSR what you're working on next?

Once done with the second and third book in the Corrupted SUN Script trilogy, I'll be writing a horror, "Zealot", and then another sci-fi series.

14. What authors, dead or alive, would you like to collaborate with?

Most definitely Terry Pratchett. I am constantly in awe of his writing skills, and to be able to collaborate with him would be amazing.

15. Thank you for participating in the interview. Can you please leave the readers with three things that may surprise them about you?

1 - I love dancing to dubstep/glitch hop/trance and various other forms of electronica.
2 - I've never riden a train or flown in a plane.
3 - I'm a terrible poet.

#Synopsis:
They were the most unlikely pair to fall in love. . .
A golden boy with a dark past. A bi-racial girl with epic faith. These two weren’t supposed to survive the system, sketchy origins and all.
Trevor Kyle has loved Shanice Bailey forever—from the time they both landed in the Baptist Children’s Home until they were young adults raised by adoptive families that had no resemblance to the worlds from which they came. Trevor has always been her protector and champion even when he was busy pushing her away for her own good.
Shanice has always taken her faith in Trevor seriously. Her childhood oath is strengthened when she learns the true meaning of family. But After Trevor’s adoptive parents die tragically and his bachelor uncle takes him in, she finds that the boy she’s always looked up to has changed, and not for the better. Yet, she can’t bring herself to forget him as her pure childhood love for him blossoms into something more.
The most generous heart and truest faith does not travel an easy path. Just when Trevor thinks he’s found a way to keep his promise to be with Shanice forever, a specter from the past threatens their future plans.

#Excerpt:
“You want to be a doctor?” Trevor said.
“No, a nurse. I want to help people get over drug addiction and stuff, but I don’t want to go to school for all the years it takes to be a doctor.”
“That’s cool. Just don’t fall for some doctor and forget about me,” he teased.
“I’d never forget you, Trevor,” she said. “And I’ll never fall for some doctor.”
“How do you know?” he said. “You’ll go off to college and I’ll be as good as forgotten.”
“You’ll forget me first,” she said. “You already have. You’re the one who’s taking Emily Winters to the prom and everything.”
“It’s just another rite of passage.”
“A what?”
“It’s one of those things you’re expected to do at certain ages that transition you from one stage in life to another.”
“Oh, well. I’m not passing any rites with anyone but you,” She said.
“You’re too young to say that, Shanice. You’ve got a lot of growing up to do.”
“So do you.” She protested, just as he expected her to.
“Yeah, but I’m closer to twenty-one than you are, and I’ll be going off to college in a couple of years.”
“I know, but I won’t forget you,” Shanice said with conviction.
“How do you know this?” Trevor asked.
“Because I’m going to be like Amy March in Little Women.”
“Never heard of it,” Trevor said.
“Probably because boys think it’s stupid. But there is a Little Men, and Jo’s Boys and they’re about orphans and stuff. Anyway, they’re classics. Mom read the books when she was about my age, so she gave them to me for Christmas.”
“What does this have to do with you not forgetting me?”
“You’ll have to read Little Women to find out,” she said cryptically.

#MyReview:

In the Obsidian Collection, one of the stories included was Obsidian Faith by Bev Elle, and it was also one of the two stories I said could easily be expanded. While it was fine on its own, I knew that there was more to Trevor and Shanice's story than was originally told.
Trevor and Shanice meet in the foster care system and immediately take to one anothe, despite a slight age difference. When they both get adopted by different neighbors, they think their ship has finally come in. But when Trevor's parents die I'm a car accident and he has to go live with his unsavory uncle, everything goes downhill.
Trevor is a computer genius, and his uncle threatens Shanice's life if Trevor doesn't comply with his illegal demands.

Like I said, the original short story was great, but I knew that there was more to it, and there was.
This is a love story above all else: Trevor loving Shanice enough that he was willing to give her up to save her life, and Shanice loving Trevor enough that she keeps her faith in him even when he lands in prison. You feel Trevor's pain as he is forced to push the love of his life away. You can also feel his desperation and determination.
Shanice is an admirable woman, staying true to her gut even when everyone told her she was a fool. She's smart, pretty and has a mind of her own. She goes from the perfect little sister to the perfect lover in a few chapters.
The backbones of the story are a considerable knowledge of computer science, much more so than this reader has! It gives the story a very authentic feel.
The second is the religious undertone. The lovers meet as kids in a church-run children's home, and the pastor and his wife adopt Shanice. It is what adds beauty to what us a slightly dark tale, the morals the characters adhere to, even with all the debauchery in the book.
The cherry on top of the cake is the ending, which is very close to making Obsidian Faith a thriller as opposed to a love story.
Is this a story for everyone? No. But it's a story everyone should read.

4/5--excellent!

BOOK REVIEW: "Indian Summer (part of the Wishful Thinking anthology)" by Doug Draa

[Before I begin my review, yes, I am a part of the Wishful Thinking anthology, as Lily Luchesi. My story is called "Kill 'Em With Kindness". I am not reviewing the book as a whole because, let's face it, that would be awfully biased, wouldn't it? This review is just for Douglas Draa's contribution to the book, as he asked me for an honest review.
This is an open invitation to the other authors who were a part of the anthology: if you want your story reviewed, drop me a line! I unfortunately haven't received my author copies of the book yet, so each story will be fresh to me.--KSR]

"Indian Summer" is the story of a young boy in the late 1950's whose parents move him to a rural area in the Midwest, where he meets an odd old man who squats on the family's property. When he first meets Daddy Boots, he's sacrificing something in the middle of the night.
As time wears on, and his father's drinking becomes more than a problem, he spends more time with Daddy Boots, he teaches him about the Sight, the spirit world and other arcane things. But is Daddy Boots a hero or a villain?

This is a very, very dark story. From the boy's troubled home life, to his terrible schoolteacher and his new fascination with the neighbor, every paragraph is leading the reader to a dark end.
The veil they cross over in, I loved seeing it mentioned in a story. I believe in something a but similar to what is described here. The story's central figure, Daddy Boots, is someone whom you think might be good but does many questionable things. He makes potions and herb bundles for different issues the townspeople have, and if they don't compensate him...you'll see.
The real horrors in here are the ones set in reality: the father's alcoholism and subsequent beatings to his wife and child. If evil could be personified, it would be a man in the throes of Captain Morgan!
For being the very first piece of fiction written by the author, this is an excellent piece of work. There were a few editing mistakes, but nothing that wouldn't be expected. As much as I love horror, this could've eased up. It was like a burst of punches, as each page brought more and more horrific elements to play.
Some will like this, some will want to burn this at the stake, and I think that that is what good horror should do!

4/5--an excellent debut!

BOOK REVIEW & AUTHOR INTERVIEW: "Bound By Blood (A Night Shift novella)" by Margo Bond Collins

Sometimes the monsters in the dark are real.
As a child, Lili Banta ignored her grandmother's cryptic warnings to avoid children outside their Filipino community in Houston. When many of those other children fell ill, Lili ignored the whispers in her community that a vampiric aswang walked among them.
Years later, Lili returns to Houston to work for the Quarantine Station of the Center for Disease Control—but she is plagued by dark, bloody dreams that consume her nights and haunt her days. When a strange illness attacks the city's children, Lili is called in to find its source, and maybe even a cure.
But in order to save the city, she must first acknowledge the sinister truth: A monster stalks the night—closer than she ever expected....

Bound By Blood by Margo Bond Collins is a fast, dark read with both old and new creatures coming to light. It's about legend, life, death and the monsters inside. While the story is very literal about monsters actually being inside the victims, I took it as a way to say that we all have monsters inside of us, and we have to fight them before they take us over.
Lili is a charming abd determined character, willing to do everything to save humanity. Will and Iverson, to me, were little more than set dressings, but the two children are as essential to the book as Lili and the aswang are. They're delightful, bright and brave kids.
The story's main villain reminds me of a vampire mixed with a Strega, the witch that takes human form in the day and at night steals children's life force, leaving them to die slow, painful deaths.
But the aswang and the world they came from are refreshingly new to me, and I think that that, above all, is the main selling point of this story: The fact that there's nothing else like it out there right now.
It's entertaining, different and leaves you wanting more!

5/5--Innovative!

INTERVIEW w/ Margo Bond Collins:

1. When/why did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve always known. The first story I remember actually writing down was basically fan-fiction of The Wizard of Oz. I wrote it in long-hand in a yellow legal pad. I’ve been writing ever since.

2. What authors inspired you when you were younger? What books do you enjoy reading today?

I have always read voraciously. When I was very young, long before the internet, I read all the Trixie Belden mystery books; my mother special-ordered them for me through our small-town department store. A little later, I read the Dragonriders of Pern series in its entirety. Our local library had a five-book checkout limit for children, so we had to go three times a week. In junior high, I read Chaucer and Shakespeare. In high school, I read Gothic mysteries. In college, I read everything and anything—high literature for school, genre literature for fun. Eventually, I ended up with a Ph.D. in literature, in part because I never could figure out how to quit wanting to learn more and more about books!

3. What was the inspiration behind your latest release, Bound By Blood?

I knew I wanted to write a spin-off from Sanguinary, and when Janice Ross asked me if I would contribute to a paranormal anthology, I had my chance. I had been reading up on the Filipino monster the aswang and her ability to seem otherwise normal, but attack children at night. Also, I have two brothers who are MDs, and we had been talking about the Ebola epidemic in Africa and how hospitals deal with infectious disease. All of those things swirled together to create this story. And then I finished it the week that Ebola came to Dallas . . .

4. You write mostly paranormal fiction. What is it about the genre that makes you love it?

I think all authors love the "what if?" factor of fiction writing. What I love about paranormal fiction is that "what if" can expand indefinitely. Anything is possible.

5. How many books will we see in the Night Shift series?

A lot! Right now, I've got at least three more novels and four more novellas planned. My plan is for most of the novels to stand alone, but be set in the Night Shift universe. Each book will be richer for readers who have read the others, and all of the stories are building toward a grand finale, but readers can jump into the series anywhere.

6. Were any of your characters' personalities or emotions taken from real life?

Always! I don't take characters wholesale from real life, but every character draws on people I know.

7. What other genres would you like to try your hand at?

Space opera.

8. What character of yours would you want to switch places with for a day and why?

None of them! Conflict and misery makes for fascinating reading, but I much prefer a drama-free life, whenever I can get it.

9. You're a professor as well as a writer. Has teaching helped your writing or vice versa?

Absolutely. I teach literature and writing, so I'm always analyzing how writers do what they do, what works and what doesn't, and how to improve my own fiction writing.

10. What books of yours do you want to see as a film or TV show? Who do you want to play your characters?

Any of them! I think Sanguinary, the first Night Shift novel, would be fun. I'd like to see Jennifer Lawrence as Detective Cami Davis, Josh Holloway as the cowboy/vampire Reese, Matthew McConaughey as the former detective Garrett, and Benicio Del Toro as the leader of the Sanguinary.

11. Where do you see yourself and your career in the next ten years?

New York Times Bestselling Author Margo Bond Collins (it's good to have dreams and goals, right?). Seriously, no matter what happens, I'll still be writing.

12. What would you be doing if you weren't writing?

Curled up in a corner, sobbing? I cannot imagine a life in which I did not write.

13. Can you tell KSR about your previous novels and what you're working on next?

My previous novels are: Sanguinary, Taming the Country Star, Legally Undead, Waking Up Dead, and Fairy, Texas.
I'm currently working on a contemporary romance for Entangled Publishing, entitled Opposing the Cowboy. Watch for it next spring! And then next summer I'll publish Siren's Kiss as part of the Falling in Deep collection with several other authors (and it just might be a Night Shift novel, too). There very well may be some more in there, too.

14. What authors, dead or alive, would you like to collaborate with?

Connie Willis, Neil Gaiman, Robin McKinley.  Or, if not collaborate, maybe trail around behind them, staring adoringly.

15. Thank you for participating in the interview. Can you please leave the readers with three things that may surprise them about you?

Thanks so much for having me!
I never know quite what other people might find surprising. But here goes:
1. I grew up in a small town in Texas that (at the time, at least) had the only college in the country that offered a degree in Rodeo.
2. I am deeply shy. (This would surprise my students, too, because I have a teaching persona that I adopt for the classroom that is anything but shy.)
3. I wrote my dissertation on violent women in eighteenth-century literature. (Okay. That might not be surprising. But it might be at least interesting . . . )

BOOK REVIEW: "Compile: Quest" by Ronel van Tonder

In the year 2036, solar storms batter Earth crippling electrical infrastructures across the globe. Night falls and the ensuing pandemonium claims millions of lives, catapulting the world into chaos.
In the midst of this global turmoil a hero emerges. The altruistic SUN Council intercedes, constructing enormous domes on each continent to protect the world’s population from the radioactive CME’s of the incessant solar storms.
But not everyone makes it to the domes. In an attempt to survive the deadly radiation, hundreds of thousands of people dig into the earth, living in squalor under an oppressive military dictatorship.
Now centuries later, the final stage of the SUN Council’s plan to decimate the world’s population approaches. But as victory glimmers on the horizon, two women from discordant halves of this new world start to unravel the conspiracy.

When we think of the greats of the science fiction genre, the first name that comes to mind is Issac Asmiov. He reinvented the genre and gave us a lot of information to process.
When we find ourselves thinking of the greats in the next decade, we will inevitably mention Ronel van Tonder, whose debut novel Compile: Quest is a feast for the imagination.
The story centers around a world in turmoil, even though some of the inhabitants have no idea that things were not always this way.
You have your typical elements, like a corporation trying to control everyone, robots as personal assistants and vicious war raging behind the scenes. But you have your unique points, particularly that the hero isn't a hero: it's a heroine. Two of them, actually. The two women chosen by the author to stop the SUN Council and end the war are as different as night and day, yet offset each other perfectly.
This world she created is frightening and somehow beautiful in its strange, cybernetic way. I love the lifestyles with robots and medical pods, all the strange things that, in 2014, don't seem to be that fictional.
Reading this is like going into a virtual reality machine, actually, and you won't want to leave once you've entered.

5/5--a new age of sci-fi.

BOOK REVIEW: "Fairy Tale Karma" by D. Thrush

Every girl daydreams about marrying her Prince Charming and living happily-ever-after in a castle. But what happens after happily-ever-after? Jill is a skeptical journalist who seeks out the truth. Princess Ava sticks to her story despite all not being well at the castle. Her handsome Prince is always busy with his charity work and she’s hooked on romance novels. Their therapist certainly has his work cut out for him. As the Princess relates her idealized storybook version, we find out the truth behind the fairy tale in flashbacks.
Ava always dreamed of marrying the Prince and living in that beautiful castle in town. She just knew it was her destiny. But how to make it happen? Her mother ran off with another man and her father ended up with the jilted wife whose bitterness poisoned their lives. Then it gets worse. She forces Ava to work at her Inn as a maid and almost has her committed when she catches her talking to one of her animal friends. Luckily, Ava’s Fairy Godmother arrives on the scene to help her formulate a plan, but her erratic magic and the appearance of a cute guy at the Inn complicate their scheme and distract Ava from her destiny. How does she manage to get from drudgery to royalty?

This book should have been titled The Truth About Cinderella! Ms. Thrush takes the story every girl knows by heart and gives it a much-needed sense of reality. No one's life is perfect and that includes princesses' lives. This is a behind the scenes look at how Ava, the princess, goes from rags to riches...and it's not just because of a missing shoe!
The last decent Cinderella adaptation I read was Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, and that book was written in 1998! Reading Fairy Tale Karma is a Disney story for adults and older teens who think they've outgrown fairy tales.
Here is the newsflash Ms. Thrush gives: you can't ever outgrow fairy tales!
The characters are all right. Jill doesn’t strike me as particularly appealing, nor does the prince, believe it or not. What really sets this apart is Ava and her fairy godmother, who's actually a drunk. She's funny, original and truly makes this story as wonderful as it is.
Ava herself is sweet and determined, a great face for a princess. She's eager and strong, a great leader of the people.
While this is an entirely new take on an old story, you still get the same joyous feeling that you did when you were five and watching the Disney movie.
This is a great book to read with a hot cup of tea, just to make you smile!

4/5--a joy to read!

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL BOOK REVIEW: "The Daughter Claus" by D. Thrush

Tina Klaus is just like every other college student. She's pretty, smart and has a crazy family, squabbling about the family business. But her REAL name is Santina Claus and her father? Santa Claus. The family business? You guessed it. Santa is getting on in years and is thinking of retiring, but Tina's brother, Nick Jr., doesn't want to be the next Santa.
Looks like it's up to Tina to save Christmas!

Holiday stories really aren't the same as they used to be. They're better! The Daughter Claus by D. Thrush is a pure holiday delight, whether you celebrate Christmas or just want to be entertained during the holiday season.
The story is thoughtful and inspiring, about family, passion, determination, girl power and following your dreams.
The characters aren't very run of the mill, despite the fame of some of them. Santa isn't so jolly, instead he's a workaholic who never spent enough time with his kids. Mrs. Claus is a health nut. Their kids are a Goth musician and a brainy business major. The reindeer are demanding and rude (and Rudolph likes to sing karaoke while drunk). The elves are part of a union. Christmas is a business, not a jolly fun time.
The characters unique to the story, the Claus kids, the boy-crazy counselor Lisa, North Pole foreman Walter, and the handsome musician George, are perfect for the story, giving its originality a deeper level.
The family dynamics are similar to what many people deal with: an ailing father with reluctant heirs, the son who refuses to have anything to do with the business, the daughter who feels neglected because she's a girl, and the wife desperately trying to hold her family together.
I think a lot of people will see themselves and others they know in them.
The story is not a typical happy Christmas story, but it's uplifting and inspiring. Tina is a spitfire with a great head on her shoulders, and just reading this brings me back to being five or six, watching old Christmas cartoons and thinking how magical that time of year was.
Please treat yourself (or someone else) this holiday season. Buy The Daughter Claus!

5/5--a wonderful, modern holiday tale!

MOVIE REVIEW: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies"

We all know the tale, a hairy little hobbit named Bilbo gets unwillingly taken on an adventure with a company of thirteen dwarves and Gandalf, a wizard. The dwarves, led by King Thorin Oakenshield, are on a quest to reclaim their homeland, the mountain Erebor, which is filled with treasure...and guarded by the dragon, Smaug.
Along the way, Bilbo meets a strange creature named Gollum, and takes his magical Ring.
The evil Orc king, Azog the Defiler, is hot on their tails, getting ready to stir up an ancient evil. To top it off, the Woodland elf king Thranduil wanted to keep them prisoner, but his son, Legolas Greenleaf, wants to help them fight, and Tauriel, an elf of high standing, is falling for the dwarf prince, Kili.
During the first two movies is when all of this happened, in An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug. Now that I've caught you all up, let's commence with the review of The Battle of the Five Armies.

This was my first 3D movie, believe it or not. I hadn't gone to see either of the fist two Hobbit films in a theatre, but I knew I had to go see this, what might very well be the final Tolkien film.
This movie picks up right where Smaug left off, with the dragon terrorizing Lake-Town, laying waste to all in its path. Bard needs to escape prison and Thorin doesn't seem at all inclined to help. The effects right off the bat are beautifully done. Especially in 3D, you wonder how it is that the fire isn't singing you.
What I liked was that (and this is you're only spolier you're going to get from me) they didn't linger overlong on the dragon and that battle. It was taken care of quickly and with the dramatics it deserved.
As the film went on, the effects got even better, drawing you in and making you feel like you're there, at Bilbo's side. They aren't effects to say, "Wow, that's unrealistic," but instead they made it all feel real, even the impossible things, like Dain (another dwarf who comes in later on in the film) riding a hog of some sort, or Thranduil's elk.
The five armies consist of Men, dwarves, elves, orcs and animals (the eagles, Beorn, etc.), for those thinking there are only four armies. Unlike The Return of the King, this battle isn't huge and impersonal, making you feel like a spectator in a sport. This was smaller (though no less violent), and you felt invested in it, as though you were fighting.
The story varies from the novel, I'll admit that. It varies far away, though not as much as the previous films. But the way it varies is necessary to make a good movie. Every call Peter Jackson made, from adding Legolas and creating Tauriel, to expanding certain scenes that the book cut short, was integral to making this movie as enjoyable as it was, and tying it into the LOTR trilogy better. Had they stuck straight to the book, Thorin would not be as likable and they would have only made one movie due to lack of content.
The acting is beyond incredible! We mostly know Martin Freeman (Bilbo) as a comedic actor, but as Richard Armitage (Thorin) said in an interview, he is a tremendously talented dramatic actor as well. He truly stunned me. His emotions are so raw and pure, it's just beautiful.
Armitage also surprised me here. While I enjoyed him on Robin Hood and in the first two films, I never imagined the depth of his talent. He has to act mad, and insanity isn't an easily conveyed state of mind. I can only imagine what it took out of him to portray the dragon-sickness to the audience. And the end...he truly captures your heart.
Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Aidan Turner; all of them give wonderful performances, the performances that will very likely define their careers. If none of them are nominated for Oscars, I just might protest.
Advice for watching the film: discard the book for three hours and enjoy the amazing ride this cast and crew takes you on. Also, invest in Kleenex. Even if you know how it ends, you'll still cry.

5/5--a stunning piece of work!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Jürgen Olschewski

1. When/why did you decide to become a writer?

I began with writing songs in my late twenties, having learned to play the guitar. This moved on to writing poems and stories, attending some evening classes for writing, and joining a local group of writers in my home town. I think the ‘why’ springs out of the enjoyment and consolation I have from reading, and wanting to see if I can make a poem or song or find a story that readers/listeners will care about and enjoy. The freedom of letting one’s imagination go where it may, to experience the lives of the characters that you write about, that is a delightful thing.

2. What authors inspired you when you were younger? What books do you enjoy reading today?

As a child, my reading would have been chiefly comics (Marvel / D.C.). As a young man I gravitated to horror and ghost stories (Pan used to do a fantastic series of anthologies). Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft spring to mind. Then, whilst training as an actor, I read mostly plays and poetry: Shakespeare, Chekhov, Miller, Brecht, Philip Larkin, Brian Patten. As I gradually became interested in writing, writers like Jean Rhys, Raymond Carver, and Chekhov again (for his stories) inspired me greatly, as they do today. Today, I find myself reading quite a lot of independently-published fiction, which might be from any genre. Some books I have recently read and enjoyed very much include: Friendship and Afterwards by Daniel Gothard, Dreamcatcher by Beverley Jones, Gone Fishing With Willie Nelson & Norah Jones by Austin Roarers, and a poetry collection, To the Lions by Claire Meadows. I am currently reading Venetian Cousins (It’s brilliant!) by Stephen Carroll, and am about to start The Syllabus of Errors by Ashley Stokes.

3. What was the inspiration behind your novel The Blue Box?

It started off as a short story really, or at least I had no idea it would become a novel. It just grew, and I followed where it led. A man being woken up late one night by a knock on the door was the only idea in my mind at the time. I’m so glad he opened the door and allowed the story to develop from there.

4. Will we ever see any of these characters again?

That’s a fascinating thing to ponder. I have no definite plans at the moment. I know that some writers, such as Stephen King, have characters that crop up across his different novels. That’s a nice idea, even if they are in just one or two scenes, it would be lovely to meet them again. In The Blue Box, the characters of Daumen and Peter, the truck driver, are strong possibilities for this, but potentially, any of them could make a return.

5. What was the intended symbolism behind the miniatures of the characters?

I am fascinated by the concept of the Doppelgänger. In The Blue Box, these entities start small and grow into the shadow-selves of their counterparts. Miniaturisation is also fascinating, and as with the double, I believe engenders a feeling of the uncanny, or the Unheimlich, as Freud termed it. The uncanny is a quality I find irresistible in fiction, from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s tales to a novel like The Glamour, by Christopher Priest.

6. Were any of the characters personalities or emotions taken from real life?

The characters in The Blue Box are wholly fictional, albeit the quest for purpose and self-actualisation upon which many of the characters embark has clear resonances for me in my life, and hopefully for other people.

7. What other genres would you like to try your hand at?

I would really love to try writing a play, perhaps a radio or stage play in the first instance. Writing a screenplay would also be very exciting. I will definitely make an attempt.

8. What would you do if you were Thomas?

I feel that Thomas did what his underlying nature compelled him to do. The concept of character being revealed under pressure holds true for him. I hope I would have done the same as him, given his circumstances.

9. Why a theater, in the end? What was it about performing that made it such a central point in the book?

Perhaps, for me, writing about the theatre and acting is inevitable in some ways, due to my previous training as an actor, and my subsequent experience of working in the theatre for a number of years. I do feel that the novel deconstructs and explores ideas about character, persona, and performance, both in real life and on stage. The theatre is a very limited space in a physical sense, but it contains worlds. I felt the stage setting acted as a crucible to bring together the major themes of the novel, as well as being a suitable venue for the novel’s denouement.

10. Would you like to see The Blue Box as a film? If yes, who do you want to see play your characters?

I would absolutely love The Blue Box to be a film. I have started making some moves in this direction, in respect of writing to potential directors. Turning the novel into a screenplay is also a possibility. I have a sense it will be a film one day, by some means or other.
With regard to a possible cast, I love the Austrian actor Bruno Ganz (from Wings of Desire, the Wim Wenders original), and think he would make a fabulous Daumen. I wonder if the younger characters would be better played by as yet ‘unknown’ actors. They are all in their early twenties, so this would seem a good idea. For Reynard, just thinking about this now, I would love a younger John Hurt, or perhaps Javier Bardem.

11. Where do you see yourself and your career in the next ten years?

I hope to have written at least two or three more novels, as well as collections of stories and poems. I have recently published three long stories on Kindle, which are getting some very nice reviews (Sliding, Walking Man, and Is it the Cleaner?), and next year I aim to publish a first collection of stories, and a collection of poems. As per a previous question, I would love to have written a play and seen it produced. Writing songs is something I will always do. I have a few up on Soundcloud at the moment, here: https://soundcloud.com/pumpstreetsongs  and shall be recording more in the new year.

12. What would you be doing if you weren't writing?

Currently, I need to do other work to pay the rent and bills, and I am grateful for that work. I believe writing is my vocation, and it’s taken a long time to feel secure about saying that. I hope one day that I may earn my living wholly by writing. That would be a wonderful position to be in. I think it will happen, eventually.

13. Can you tell KSR what you're working on next?

I’m putting together a first collection of stories, and also a first collection of poems. Many of these have been published in magazines and anthologies, or broadcast on radio, over the years. I am also developing an idea for a novel – incidentally, this began as a short story as well, so you never know where things will lead.

14. What authors, dead or alive, would you like to collaborate with?

Jean Rhys, Chekhov, Hermann Hesse, Raymond Chandler, Brian Patten, Raymond Carver, to name a few.

15. Thank you for participating in the interview. Can you please leave the readers with three things that may surprise them about you?

· I played a creepy guy who steals underwear in an episode of the TV police drama series, The Bill.
· I’ve probably had over a hundred different jobs over my working life so far. Some didn’t last very long.
· Dustin Hoffman came to speak to us at RADA while I was a student there. He was appearing as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice in the West End.

BOOK REVIEW: "The Blue Box" by Jurgen Olschewski

Late one night, Thomas Ruder receives a strange package: a small blue box. Another such item is delivered to Liselotte Hauptmann. These ‘gifts’ will change their lives forever.
The Blue Box is a story about identity, about fulfilling your dreams, and becoming the person you always were, at whatever cost. It is a story of journeys, both external and internal.
In the far-off border town of Grenze, a play is to be performed at the Sheol Theatre. Reynard the impresario expects a very special audience. Thomas, Liselotte, and their friend Johann, are drawn into Reynard’s seductive web, as Daumen, the box-maker, must decide who his master really is.

The Blue Box is...something else. I can't truly describe how I felt as I found myself immersed in this fantasy world in Germany, where danger lurks around every corner and what you see isn't always what you get. Where dreams that are lost have a way if coming back to haunt you.
I didn't know if I was reading a book similar to Tolstoy, Poe or Dostoyevsky. This was so similar in style to all the if those writers, but it has its own life, its own style and its own message, though what that message is is to be determined by the individual reader, not by yours truly. In my mind, it has a "follow your dreams" message intermingled with a "be careful what you wish for".
But its not just a literal story, oh no. You have living, beating hearts in small boxes, fingers inside cakes, lifelike dolls, geriatric children and an overall sense of the unreal, the likes of which I've only read in Poe's or, to mention a more modern novelist, Stephen King's books.
The characters are all chess pieces in an elaborate play set by the author, as he deftly moves them about his board for the readers' pleasure. It's like a dance with death in a way: you know the end has a fifty percent chance of being horrible, but you must read on...it's a compulsion. I couldn't tear my eyes away.
If you haven't read The Blue Box, go read it. Really. I can't recommend it enough. It's rare to find a book with this style of writing, this sense of intelligence and deep meanings embedded in the story.

5/5--put this at the top of your TBR list!
