BOOK REVIEW; "Pigeon-Blood Red" by Ed Duncan

For underworld enforcer Richard "Rico" Sanders, it seemed like an ordinary job. Retrieve his gangster boss's priceless pigeon-blood red ruby necklace and teach the double-dealing cheat who stole it a lesson. A job like a hundred before it. But the chase quickly goes sideways and takes Rico from the mean streets of Chicago to sunny Honolulu, where the hardened hit man finds himself in uncharted territory when a couple of innocent bystanders are accidentally embroiled in the crime.
As Rico pursues his new targets, the hunter and his prey develop an unlikely respect for one another and Rico is faced with a momentous decision: follow his orders to kill the couple whose courage and character have won his admiration, or refuse and endanger the life of the woman he loves?

I received a copy of this book from the publicist for an honest review.

I love crime novels, but I always have an issue with many of them being too similar to each other, not having a unique voice because the protagonists are too much alike. Pigeon-Blood Red differs from that because, while Rico is fairly run of the mill, Ed Duncan's voice is not. He writes beautifully weaved sentences that make you see the book in a different light than most others in the genre. Duncan did a great job taking common characters and making them sound even more exciting.
The plot is straightforward, lots of action with a hint of romance. Morals and values do come into it later on, making it nailbiting in a different manner than it already has been.
It's set partially in Chicago, which I love. Give me a book set in my home and I will be a very happy reader. The descriptions of the city and of Honolulu are well-written, adding some visuals to the story.
The book is dark, suspenseful, and heartfelt. A must read for crime lovers.

4/5--excellent work!
