Excerpt:
No one answers when I pound again, so I try the knob. It turns and the door screeches open.
“Hello!” I call out as I poke my head in. I don’t see anyone, and I once again fight the urge to turn around and walk back out the door. Lou could be lying on the floor bleeding somewhere or convulsing from an overdose. I take a deep breath and step inside the trailer.
            “Lou! Anyone home!”
The trailer is a single wide, so it isn’t very big. When you open the front door, you are in the living room, which is right next to a tiny kitchen. Down one hall is a bedroom. First, I survey the living room and kitchen and don’t see anything unusual. I walk past the kitchen toward one of the bedrooms. As I step closer to it, my heart thumps wildly. The bedroom door is closed, but I can hear muffled head-banging music, as if someone is listening to it through headphones at two hundred decibels, and I sigh with relief. I open the door. No Lou, but an MP3 player hooked to ear buds lies on the bed.
There might be a bathroom down the opposite hallway. Again, my heart thuds as I approach two doors, one on the right, a bathroom no doubt. I pause and look down. No pool of blood seeps from under the door. I grab the door handle, find it unlocked, and jerk it open. The bathroom is empty too. It’s dirtier than a public toilet at a crack house, and I feel like I want to throw up.
Quickly, I close the door. The last bedroom is all that remains. I don’t think he’s in there, but I check it anyway. As I suspect, the room is empty. This must be the master bedroom where Lou’s keepers live.
I still can’t fully shake my feeling of dread, but then I think Lou was probably just late to school, and while I was traipsing through the woods, he probably went on to school, and at this very moment, he and Ella are laughing their asses off.
I laugh a little too, but I also feel good about myself in another way. The old Dean wouldn’t have been too concerned with anyone else. I guess you could say the new Dean has learned to make a few friends. I realize how tired I really am from not only the walk but also the unbearable tension I have felt from thinking my friend is dead.
I sit on the couch―a little reluctantly because it’s pretty dirty, but then again our couch is secondhand, so I can’t be judging other people’s possessions. I think about how ridiculous I feel, and then I laugh aloud again.
I start to leave, but something outside the window catches my eye.
I stare for a long time, feeling unsure.
Lou swings from a tree outside the window; he’s hanged himself with an electrical cord.

BOOK SALE: "Tag By Shari J. Ryan

What if your family had a big secret . . . a life changing secret. My dad, the bigwig CIA agent, was always on the run, whether he was being chased or doing the chasing. I missed him. Then my mom passed away, and my sister was murdered. I turned my solitude to strength because the alternative was too bleak.

But my luck seemed to turn: I met Tango. And while I want him more than I’ve ever wanted anything in my twenty-two years, danger lurks around every corner and I simply can’t take the chance of it finding me. But his tattoos, his smell, his darkness, and his body— that marine has taken over my every thought. But, what if he too isn’t what I think? A ticking time bomb isn’t going to leave me much time to waver. Even the bravest person can be in need of a miracle.

Before she was gone, my mom warned me to know everyone and trust no one. But what was I supposed to do when I found out I am the one not to be trusted? Turns out, I was always the bait in this conspiracy.

In author Shari J. Ryan’s New Adult novel, TAG, the canyons hold secrets, the waterfalls provide safety, and romance has a pesky way of showing up when you are sweaty and dirty and least expect it.

I’ve been seated among the dozens of other passengers for the past two hours, watching the gate times change a number of times before I see the plane actually arrive. Just as I’m powering my phone down, preparing to board, an awful stench burns my nose from a few inches away. A middle-aged man with greasy black hair and a thick lip-covering mustache who smells exactly like the inside of a port-a-potty has found a reason to sit directly beside me in a row of empty seats. When my eyes unfortunately meet his, he takes the opportunity to speak to me. “Heading to Boston?” he asks. I raise my eyebrows and force a tightlipped smile. I simply follow that with a nod and give him a no shit look. “I heard winter’s coming early this year,” he continues.
“Cool,” I mumble with a sigh. I pull a magazine out of my bag and open it in front of my face, hoping to block my vision of the man’s blackened-stained grin. But it’s only seconds before I’m taken back when his finger sweeps down the bare skin of my collarbone.
“What does that mean?” he asks, pointing to my tattoo.
With a smooth motion, I lay my magazine down onto my lap and place my hand over his, giving him the false notion that I’m a gentle person. I take the opportunity to offer him a slight smile before I twist his forefinger backwards as far as it will go before the expectant snap. “I’m sorry,” I say sweetly. “Did I tell you it was okay to touch me?” I pull down a little harder, and he smiles in response to the pain. But as I hold my hand there, I see the smile begin to fade.
“It’s a free country, chicky,” he sputters as his tongue knocks around between his bare gums.
“Why would you think it's okay to touch me?” I ask again, keeping my voice calm, yet stern. He licks his lips and looks me up and down, responding with only a look. “Do you go around touching girls half your age because you feel it's okay?”
He clears his throat and looks around to see who’s watching or listening, but I don’t move my eyes from his. “Why not?” he says, shrugging his bony shoulders. “Besides, you’re definitely asking for it.”
He thinks I’m asking for it? I’m wearing a fucking scoop neck, black long sleeve shirt, jeans, and combat boots. “The only reason it's okay, is because no one has ever probably told you no. But it occurs to me that after I snap your finger off your hand, you won’t be able to touch people inappropriately anymore, will you?”
He hoots with laughter, dragging in attention he probably shouldn’t want. “You think you could break my finger, little chicklette?”
I pull his finger a little further, and his smile grows. “Ow, stop. You’re hurting me,” he puckers his lips and winks at me.
“Oh, look, it’s your right hand. You a righty?” I turn his hand over and see deep callouses bubbling on his palm. “Yes, you are. So, if I rip this thing off, you wouldn't miss it, right?” I turn his hand back over and glare into his beady eyes. He’s questioning my words. He’s unsure of my capabilities. And that’s fine. “Sound okay to you? Or are you going to leave and stop touching people?” His smile fades and his eyes widen. I release his hand and offer him a smart-ass smile. “Oh, and the tattoo means death. It’s a Maori Warrior symbol. They used to eat their enemies once they slaughtered them. Cool, huh?”
I see his Adam’s apple struggle to move. He lifts his bag from the ground and nearly trips over his own feet, darting away.
I reopen my magazine to the page I was reading and refocus my attention on an article as I hear a soft chuckle coming from the other side of me. I turn to see who was enjoying the free entertainment and I’m faced with a man who looks to be either a wrestler or in the military—black shaven hair, stiff jaw and bulging muscles on every inch of his arms. His eyes are currently focused on a book, and I suppose he could have been laughing at that, rather than me. But as I question it, his large shamrock green eyes lift and look right at me. A slight grin tugs on the corner of his lips, and he winks so quickly I’m questioning whether it was me who might have blinked. Before I can react, he stands up and walks away.
I swallow hard and refocus my attention on the magazine once more. Stupid attractive man causing a moment of feebleness. I didn’t react, though. He winked at me. I think. And I didn’t make a snide comment or scowl. Weakness.
I let out a few short breaths, regaining my composure. He’s gone. It’s fine.

NEW RELEASE/BOOK REVIEW: "Haven Lake" by Holly Robinson

Sydney Bishop hasn’t returned to Haven Lake, her idyllic childhood home, since a pair of shocking, tragic deaths shattered her family when she was only sixteen. Now a child psychologist engaged to marry a successful surgeon, Sydney has worked hard to build a relationship with Dylan, her fiancé’s teenage son, so she feels nothing but empathy when he runs away—until she discovers that his hitchhiking journey has led him to Haven Lake and her mother Hannah’s sheep farm. Sydney returns to Haven Lake for the first time in twenty years to coax the boy home. Against her daughter’s wishes, Hannah offers to take Dylan in until he’s ready to reveal his own troubling secrets.

I received an advance copy of Haven Lake from the publisher for an honest review.

First of all, let me say that while I read everything, if I went to a bookstore right now, this would not be my first choice. In fact, had I not been asked to review this, there's a chance that I might've never read it, and that would've been a real shame, because Haven Lake is an excellent book with the deepest emotions running through it like a river.
What's funny is, though the plot is driven by the characters, the plot was better than the characters.
Dylan and Sydney are very normal people, you might live next door to them. Hannah is a bit more unique and outrageous, and she was very enjoyable. I think it was the mix of normalcy and mystery that really brought this story together as a cohesive whole. You had Sydney's story, Hannah's storyband Dylan's story. Each would've made an excellent individual novella, but somehow Ms. Robinson managed to tie them all together into one beautiful book.
The story starts out strong, levels out for awhile and then you get hit with a shocker even I didn't see coming. Don't let the women's fiction part get you: this is, in every way, a mystery. It just happens to have a little more heart than your typical mystery novel.
An excellent book, and one you'll want to share with your loved ones!

4/5--a great read!

BOOK REVIEW: "Booker - Streets of Mayhem" by John W. Mefford

On a cool October afternoon, the majestic blue sky above Dallas is polluted with swells of gray smoke, carrying shattered memories of fifteen people, mostly children, who've just been killed by an explosion on a bus. A white supremacist group claims responsibility, opening old wounds, turning neighbor against neighbor--fracturing the community.
A Southeast Dallas native, Booker T. Adams couldn't be more invested in the city…in the people he'd served for the last seven years as a beat cop for the Dallas Police Department.  Without warning, it becomes personal for Booker on so many levels. And as panic grips the city, he must decide how much he's willing to sacrifice to end the chaos.
With his career called into question and his family in the crosshairs of one terrorist act after another, Booker invests every fiber of his being to protect a broken community, and to stop the brutal, senseless slayings.
If he fails, terrorism will reign in the city of Dallas.

A mystery/suspense novel that includes homegrown terrorism and social/racial issues isn't something you come across every day, but you do here in John Mefford's newest release.
Following a disgraced cop named Booker T. Adams (great name choice, in my opinion, as I'm a fan of the wrestler Booker T), we get an in-depth look at racial discrimination in the worst way, when children are murdered by a version of the KKK. As someone who was actually targeted once by the group because I'm Sicilian, this story hit close to home.
Of course, readers will think of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin, but this is those stories tenfold.
And it doesn't just rest at being a good commentary on social injustice, oh no. This book has a real plot, a deep mystery that keeps you as hooked as an old Agatha Christie, but written from a very modern view. It shows up close what we really fear, which is terrorists in our backyard. Wanton death for no reason.
It will keep your mind churning, long into the night.

4/5--wonderfully thought-provoking!

NEW RELEASE BOOK REVIEW/EXCERPT: "Unblocked Episode Two" by Marni Mann

[This review is for people 18+ ONLY!--KSR]

One taste was all it took. Derek Block demands more. Frankie Jordan wants to run. Pleasure complicates business. But some passion is just too hard to resist. Things are getting hotter as real estate gets real….
This is Episode Two of the five-episode Timber Towers novella series.

EXCERPT:

I held her wrists above her head and leaned down so she could feel my words, not just hear them. “I give you what I want, when I want - my fingers, my mouth, my tongue...” My hand dropped to my zipper. I fisted the crotch of my jeans. “Even my fucking cock. Understood?”
I expected her to pull back, but her focus seemed to soften as her eyes traveled down my stomach and settled on my hand. I released the bulge so she could get a better look at my dick.
She licked her lips. “Got it.”
I knelt on the bed and straddled her body, holding her hands against the headboard. I had made a special request for this bed, I wanted something wooden, with slats on the headboard, carved and sanded, so the finish was smooth on all four sides. I knew she could handle the rubbing, but I didn’t want her skin cut or splintered.
“You’re not going to tie me up…”
I weaved the flannel around her wrists and secured the knots to the headboard. “I’m not?” The shirt was tight enough to prevent her from moving, but loose enough to allow circulation.
She glanced at my handiwork. “You warned me that you would do this…I never thought you really would.”
“Don’t ever doubt me, Frankie. I always keep my promises.”

MY REVIEW:

After the cliffhanger ending of Marni Mann's Unblocked Episode One, I was ecstatic when I received episode two fairly quickly in my inbox. Because, let's face it, I'm a sucker for scruffy guys with blue eyes and an up front attitude. I fell for Derek as soon as he was introduced, and I'm not usually one for "book boyfriends".
Again, Frankie is a smart, sweet, decisive and independent, maintaining her strength even while she's upset or depressed. While she's hurt, she's still manages to live a life preparing to head a major company. If any leading lady in an adult novel is worth looking at in an inspirational way, it's her.
Plot wise, this one kept up the narrative of Episode One, picking up right where it left off. Frankie still needs to sign the contract to represent Derek's new building, but she's worried that her attraction to him will mess everything up. Not all of the characters from book one made it into book two except for honorable mentions. Brea, Frankie's mischievous assistant, and Anna, her closest friend, do appear, and they are very enjoyable secondary characters.
I don't want to give anything away about the relationship between Frankie and Derek, but I will warn the readers one thing: read at your own risk. This is seriously one of the sexiest books I've ever read. Derek's demanding attitude could make any woman get turned on.
Oh, one last thing: Ms. Mann...why? I can't handle another cliffhanger!

BOOK REVIEW: "Artificial Absolutes" by Mary Fan

Jane Colt is just another recent college grad working as an Interstellar Confederation office drone—until the day she witnesses her best friend, Adam, kidnapped by a mysterious criminal. An extensive cover-up thwarts her efforts to report the crime, shaking her trust in the authorities. Only her older brother, Devin, believes her account.
Devin hopes to leave behind his violent past and find peace in a marriage to the woman he loves. That hope shatters when he discovers a shocking secret that causes him to be framed for murder.
With little more than a cocky attitude, Jane leaves everything she knows to flee with Devin, racing through the most lawless corners of the galaxy as she searches for Adam and proof of her brother’s innocence. Her journey uncovers truths about both of them, leading her to wonder just how much she doesn’t know about the people she loves.

Sci-fi meets Veronica Mars in Mary Fan's Artificial Absolutes, the story of a girl who goes on an intergalactic quest to rescue her kidnapped friend.
This book has a little bit of everything: romance, mystery, conspiracy, and science fiction. Usually those things might not mix well, but somehow Mary Fan managed to wring out a tale that not only works, but is gripping and keeps you entertained for hours!
The characters are all unique and each one has a particular part to play in the narrative. Jane is definitely my favorite, with her sharp wit and confidence. Devin is also very likable, and very pitiable. He's framed for murder and is forced out of the life he's made for himself.
The plot didn't need to be set in the future, but it worked that way, too. It's a journey that starts out as a rescue, but turns into a fact-finding mission. You, as a reader, never know what's coming next. For me, that's a big deal, because I can usually guess everything! You're given here a great novel that will transport you to a whole other world!

4/5--excellent!

BOOK REVIEW: "Wait For Me" by TS McKinney and BJ Grinder

Susannah is a dominatrix and FBI agent. Jasper is a younger submissive who wants to surrender to her every desire. The dominant side of her wants him badly, but the age gap holds her back. Susannah’s first assignment introduces her to the sickening world of human trafficking. Jasper, a genius with computers, jumps at the chance to do anything that will allow him to spend time with Susannah.
When Susannah is betrayed; Jasper is abducted. Will Susannah rescue Jasper before too much damage is done to his body…and soul? Will she get the chance to prove her love?

When it comes to an type of erotica, it's usually sex first and plot second. Thankfully, with Wait For Me, that's not the case! While this story will satisfy your bookish fantasies, it will also engage you in a twisty plot with very dark elements.
Susannah is the main character, a tough FBI agent with a spft spot for her younger neighbor. First of all, I'm sure people will have reservations with a woman in her late twenties wanting an eighteen year-old, but I didn't. Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, just remember that, in America's eyes, he's legally an adult.
Jasper, the teen in question, isn't much different from any other character you'd find, except that he's younger and extremely smart. He's still sexy, but his character pales in comparison to Susannah.
Plot-wise, it was very interesting. I liked combining human trafficking, FBI and romance. It's not a typical threesome, that's for sure, but it worked very well.
My only issue with the book was that, despite its excellent storyline, it was a bit predictable. I knew certain things would happen at certain times. It didn't make it less enjoyable, but it was still a little disappointing.
Bottom line: if you like your sex with a good dose of actual plot, as I do, you'll enjoy Wait For Me!

4/5--a great, sexy story!
