What would you do to have your every wish?
Caroline Adams wanted nothing more than to be a famous author, selling millions of books and reigning as queen of the best seller's list, and she swore she'd pay any price to get there. However, when a strange figure granted her heart's wish, Caroline made a bargain she couldn't keep.Twenty years later, out of time and out of luck, Caroline must pay for what she's been given, and the price is steep.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
There are a few books that can give me the creeps. Catherine Stovall's 34 page horror novel definitely gave me the creeps! It deals with something that all authors can relate to: the fear of being a failure. Yes, every human being can relate to that, but authors have it fairly bad: constantly receiving letters/emails telling you you're not good enough, bad reviews, and the self-doubt that comes upon them like the Plague.
Caroline Adams embodies that fear, that doubt, and takes it to an extreme level when she sells her soul for twenty years of being a bestselling horror author. She thinks that it was a dream, that she didn't actually sign a contract with a demon, but does she really think it's a dream, or is she just telling herself that to make herself feel better?
That's the big selling point of this book: you get a half hour of entertainment, but hours worth of speculation and theories about Caroline and her "deal".
Did she seal a deal with blood's kiss, or was it simply desperation and diagnosed schizophrenia that made her think that she did? Or was the schizophrenia just a doctor's way of explaining away something that men of science usually don't believe in?
I find myself coming back to this many times since I have finished the story, and I still have not decided!
Rarely can a horror story make you feel creeped out, make you empathize/sympathize with the character, AND make you think. This story has really stuck in my head. I loved, loved, loved it!
5/5--scary and surprisingly deep.
