EXCERPTS:

Prologue
Our car careened into the frozen lake. As the icy waters rushed to fill what little air was left in the sinking car, my mother’s body pinned me against the seat. I tried to force her limp weight away, but it proved useless. I didn’t have the strength to push her off. Hopeless, I watched the water level rise. Panic along with the frigid waters began to restrict any movement I made in my state of desperation.  As the flesh freezing water crept to my chin, my mother began to float, nearly too weak to move, I pulled her close, cradling her lifeless body, knowing I’d soon reunite with her. My secret was real, not an illusion as Dr. Seth had convinced my mother it was. Angry voices screamed out to me in a state of confusion and hysteria. Mors ifanti felix, juvenis acerba, nimis sera est seni! I didn’t want to believe their words. The desperation of wanting to live suddenly opened my eyes and had me fighting for my life. I had foolishly wasted away a year, fixated on my destiny, pondering on how my life should have ended; wanting it to end in the worst way. Now, it seemed death was nothing more than a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Dying was not an option, nor would I accept their reasons for taking my mother. I would fight––fight for the both of us.

Chapter 3:
“Bethy, I can’t answer for Michael, but I can say I have never seen him act the way he does when he’s around you ––not with any other descendant, anyway. He looks at you differently. . . I. . .I don’t know, Beth.  All I can say is that Michael’s physical form makes him extremely vulnerable, making it easier for him to fall victim to human emotions. Why am I even talking about this with you?” he pressed his lips into a hard line.
“Freddie, why are you getting upset?”
“Beth, just forget it, it’s never going to work between the both of you no matter how much he has fallen in love with you. It’s crazy! It would be impossible,” he snapped bitterly.
At that moment, my world suddenly slowed to a complete standstill. The sound of my own heartbeat fluttered, thumped and swooshed loudly beneath my top. Freddie’s mouth slipped the truth, yet he refused to come straight out and tell me. Michael the Archangel, leader of the Legions was in love with me. My heart ached even more and a sharp pain in the pit of my stomach intensified realizing, I was in love with an Archangel––a forbidden love.

Chapter 4:
My routine at Eden had become a daily ritual. In the early morning hours, I’d go for a run, play the piano, or stroll the grounds of Eden. After a quick shower, I’d head toward a set of French doors that opened up to a stone terrace overlooking Lake Louise. Every morning Faith prepared a table of scrumptious breakfast foods and the morning paper alongside my journal. I never tired of writing about the sprawling gardens of rosebushes, mixed Canterbury bells, and Elderflowers infused with chamomile. I’d sit, gladly inhaling the scent of the freshly baked biscuits, warm croissants, and raspberry tea.
The beautiful imagery was halted, as I reflected back to the morning of December 21st, the day after my arrival at Lake Louise, I recalled glancing at the morning paper that was neatly folded on a round English garden table next to a cup of tea. The paper was opened to a small article written in the New York State blotter. I squeezed my eyes shut, desperately wanting to read the article whose title caught my eye, but dithered momentarily instead. I blinked as I held up the paper, focusing on one particular story written in small black ink:
“Local Allegany Woman and Her Daughter Plunge to Their Deaths”
The morning of December 20th, a woman and her daughter plunged to their death off the icy cliffs of Chimney Bluffs, on Lake Ontario, New York. Just after 10 AM, a call from eye witnesses, Dr. Seth Bates and his young daughter, came in through the New York State Police, and other police and emergency centers throughout the region. Icy roads caused particularly treacherous conditions as road crews rushed to respond to dropping temperatures and the onset of freezing rain.
New York State Police investigated the one vehicle fatality, killing Grace Morgan, 47, of Caneadea, NY and her daughter Elizabeth, 17. Emergency workers were able to recover the vehicle from the frozen waters of Ontario Lake, along with the remains of Grace Morgan. The body of her daughter has not yet been recovered.
Dr. Bates claimed that Elizabeth Morgan was a patient of his at Letchworth Village Asylum. He also disclosed that Elizabeth had attempted several times to commit harm to herself and was suicidal. Dr. Bates commented, “It saddens me that Ms. Morgan’s daughter may have intentionally caused the tragic accident that resulted in their untimely deaths.” The accident remains under investigation.
***
The news of our deaths and how I was responsible for it infuriated me still. The reminders escalated a fury from my chest to my fingers, causing me to tear apart the morning paper, wanting desperately to strike the psychiatrist whose lies riddled the paper on that fateful morning instead, with the biggest and deadliest blade I could have gotten my hands on.

MY REVIEW:

In Conception, we follow teenager Elizabeth, whose supernatural abilities revealed (*spoiler from book one, Descendant*) that she is a part of an ancient prophecy that, if thwarted, could bring about disaster for angels and mortals alike. But the prophecy isn't the only thing she has to deal with: the Archangel Michael, who has a human vessel here on Earth, is falling hopelessly in love with her.
As with Descendant, we get a lot of teenage emotions, but Elizabeth isn't a typical whiny teen. She's had to grow up before her time, dealing with these powers and her slightly depressed homelife. As you read in the above excerpt, she has to deal with a very difficult death, and does so very well. She's a strong character with her own mind, a good heart and determination.
This story moves at a faster pace than its predecessor, taking you along this fantastic and twisting journey with Elizabeth, watching her fight for what's right, for humanity and for love.
By the time you reach the end, you will be wishing for more, as I am. This is a wonderful book that everyone, of every age, will enjoy. It is unlike anything else in the YA genre today!

5/5--a must-read!
