BOOK REVIEW: "Red Dagger" by H.G. Lynch
Ruairidh is a Demon Hunter, like his father. But when his father is murdered by a demon he was hunting, Ruairidh must move back to Scotland to live with his mother and brother.
He vows to kill the demon who murdered his father, but he struggles to balance Hunting with college, and his hostile brother makes it clear he wishes Ruairidh had never come back.
Doesn't help that Ru is falling for the girl his brother is crushing on.
Life is going to get very tricky for Ruairidh, but as long as he has his sword and his wits, he's ready to take on whatever comes at him.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
For those who have followed my blog, you'll know I have a soft spot for upper YA and NA paranormal. Because I love it so much, I am extra-critical when I review them. A book that opens with a brutal murder? You've got my attention!
H.G. Lynch has proven that she can write many different genres, but I have to say that I think she does her best work right here, in Red Dagger (and that's saying a lot, considering how much I loved Cursed Rebel).
The characters are surprisingly normal for the plot, even Ruairidh, who really just loves his dad very much and wants to emulate him. I liked the normalcy compared with the supernatural elements. They played nicely off of each other.
Some parts of this story were a bit predictable, but most of it was just a really fun thrill ride that will entertain anyone over the age of sixteen. The last time I read an upper YA book in this style that I enjoyed so much was Lord Loss by Darren Shan. It really left we wanting more from these characters.
4.5/5--horrific and a lot of fun!
Add Red Dagger on Goodreads. It will be released on August 25th, and I will update with purchase links when I have them!
